Concept2 has been the gold standard of rowing machine for a long time, that’s why it has a premium price tag. Many professionals consider Concept2 to be the best rowing machine available. Concept2 can easily be placed in your house and even be moved around. There is a quick-release frame lock mechanism that allows the machine to be easily disassembled and stored anywhere. It’s aesthetically pleasing and available in grey or black.
But it would be better to place Concept2 somewhere far from where people are gathering due to the noise. Concept2 is a fan rower and could generate enough noise to annoy other people in the house especially when they’re watching TV.
Concept2 has a display that can give you plenty of information, such as tracking speed, heart monitor, watts, and calories. Comfort-wise, Concept2 is very comfortable. They put much thoughts into designing the machine. Footrests are adjustable, the handle is ergonomic, and the caster wheels allow it to be easily moved around.

WaterRower Review
WaterRower is new to the market, especially when compared to Concept2. But don’t let that decide your opinion on this machine. WaterRower has been a nice surprise for everyone who is looking for a great rowing machine.
WaterRower is priced at $420 and it comes with Water Performance, 16 Hydro Blades, high-profile sear, R2 Fitness Meter and easy storage capability. The price tag is more than half cheaper compared to Concept2, but is the machine just as good or even better?
First of all, WaterRower design is unique. It’s made of solid ash wood and complete with a honey-oak stain. It looks good when placed indoor. It doesn’t eat too much space and pretty much unobtrusive. It can easily be folded without disassembling it.
It feels comfortable to use the machine, sure it’s not as comfortable as Concept2 but there is no complain so far. The seat is tilted backwards and put more pressure on the lower back. Footrests are made of molded plastic with sharp edges, it’s recommended to use shoes or shocks while using the machine. The flat rail is really easy on the knees and very well-designed.
WaterRower is powered with water, add the solid ash material, it’s not loud and doesn’t vibrate too much. The only noise you’ll hear is from the water sloshing around inside the tank. Compared to Concept2 this is much quieter. This makes WaterRower, compatible in a small house or a living room with people in it.
WaterRower feels very smooth to use, thanks to its patented water flywheel. It’s a closed tank of water that is very quiet and designed to simulate the feeling of rowing an actual boat, the faster you row the more resistance you’ll feel. This way you can’t just blindly move your arms around while exercising, you need to build your pace and be a bit more technical. Many people said they’re not used to it at first as it requires a big change from the user.
Now let’s talk about the monitor. It’s not as advanced as Concept 2 monitor but it’s sufficient enough for most people. It’s very user friendly, so you’ll most likely to get used to it during the first few uses. The monitor tracks intensity, duration, distance, heart rate, stroke rate and many other statistics. Most people don’t even use all of those statistics, so any home user would be satisfied with its capabilities.
Concept2 Model D vs WaterRower
Verdict
Both WaterRower and Concept2 are great rowing machines that can satisfy every user. These machines offer many great benefits of working out at home and being comfortable at the same time. design-wise, WaterRower is very unique and easy on the eyes but it’s more of a personal preference.
Pricewise, Concept2 is twice more expensive and offers more durability and overall comfort. But it doesn’t really innovate the way you exercise unlike WaterRower. If you have the money and want to go the safer route, Concept2 might be the best for you. But if you want something different and cheaper, WaterRower is clearly the winner of this match up. The water tank that it has is very innovative for everyone.
We think that WaterRower is a great machine and very cheap considering that you’ll get a one of a kind rowing machine.
